Not anymore. Now, thanks to Facebook, the “reunions” happen online, leaving very few surprises for the actual party. Some people love it – they say it lets them skip the small talk. Okapis are the wallflowers of the forest, so adept at avoiding interaction–even with other okapis–that western zoologists didn’t even document their existence till 1901. The calves don’t defecate for the first six months of their lives so predators can’t track them. That’s dedication. Getting these things to breed in captivity is not easy, so when a zoo pulls it off–like the Bronx Zoo recently did–they like to crow about it a little. One of the biggest myths about dress codes is that they exist to keep out clothes. But more often than not, they’re meant to keep out certain kinds of people. Don’t want day-trippers in your Hamptons club? Put the kibosh on shorts and sandals. Jersey Shore types not your thing? Ban Ed Hardy shirts. Don’t care for black people? Just say no to baggy jeans and “bling!”

It’s not easy being the wife of a star athlete in New York, particularly if you were a little famous to begin with (just ask Anna Benson). LaLa Vazquez, MTV host and  reality TV also-ran, married Carmelo Anthony months before his blockbuster trade to the Knicks. Now, she’s trying to boost her own fame without appearing to exploit his. Apparently, neither do a lot of other people. Hookahs have become wildly popular among college and even high school students in recent years, due in part to loopholes in indoor smoking bans that have allowed hookah bars–which cater to kids under 21–to thrive. And the smoke these pipes produce is actually pretty dangerous, to say nothing of the carbon monoxide from the coal. Now, legislators, health advocates and school administrators are trying to fight back against what they call the latest front in the ever-shifting war on tobacco.
